PROFESSIONAL & TEACHING RELATED EXPERIENCE

English Teacher, Evangelical Free Church of Canada Mission

Based in Tokyo, Japan, I led English classes for children and adults of all proficiency levels to build their conversation skills, vocabulary, literacy, comprehension and pronunciation. I independently managed my time, created and delivered 11 unique lesson plans weekly. As a staff member of a Canadian organization, I built and maintained correspondence with a base of ministry partners to raise financial support and awareness for missionary work in Japan, through oral presentations, receptions, blog posts and letters in English and Mandarin. I also bolstered the community outreach of churches in the Greater Tokyo Area by leading and participating in events to serve local families.

ESL Coach, Ridgemont High School

During the course of a Remedial English Program, I mentored students studying English as a Second Language (ESL), to enhance their understanding of course material. I created plans and encouraged students to achieve their homework and project goals. Twice a week, I worked with the students to practice their reading, writing, and conversational English skills in order to expand their vocabulary and foster effective communication habits.

Teacher Assistant, Ottawa Capital Chinese School

In this position, I guided students of different backgrounds in writing and in practicing oral Mandarin. I helped teachers photocopy and organize course materials, and translated for a grades 7-8 conversation class. In the grade 2 class, I led the children in educational games using a computer to exercise their language skills. On registration day, I recorded and received registration fees as well as provided information to the students’ parents and guardians.

Teaching Assistant, Carleton University

As an instructor for undergraduate students, I prepared for and taught weekly tutorials to teach students to generate and interpret descriptive statistics with a statistics software package. I explained research methods during class and office hours, and graded assignments in a timely and effective manner. In order to best help students succeed, I conferred regularly with the professor and with other teaching assistants about the course content and project requirements.
